How to Use Narcan® Nasal Spray!

Narcan® Nasal Spray is a fast-acting medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose by restoring breathing. It is easy to use, safe for non-medical responders, and should always be followed by emergency medical care.
  1. Recognize an opioid overdose: Look for slow or no breathing, unresponsiveness, blue or gray lips/nails, or choking sounds.
  2. Call emergency services immediately before or after giving Narcan.
  3. Lay the person on their back and support their neck.
  4. Open the Narcan device: Peel back the package to remove the spray.
  5. Position the spray: Insert the tip into one nostril until your fingers touch the nose.
  6. Administer the dose: Press the plunger firmly to release the spray.
  7. Wait 2–3 minutes: Watch for breathing to improve or the person to respond.
  8. Give another dose if needed: If there’s no response, use a new spray in the other nostril.
  9. Place in recovery position: Turn the person on their side once breathing returns.
  10. Stay until help arrives: Narcan may wear off, and the person may relapse into overdose.
